Crystal Ball

As we embark on a new year, perhaps this is an opportunity to open ourselves to new possibilities. I’ve never been a fan of resolutions because they can set you up for failure. Intentions, yes. Changing the way we think, yes. Finding new ways of communicating and listening, absolutely.

It’s easy enough to focus on the things that are going or might go wrong, they tend to weigh you down and can become a centerpiece of your daily life. Refocusing on what is good and positive can redirect your energy and give you the freedom to go through your days. A crystal ball with all of the answers would be wonderful. But it was only when I figured out how to live in the present, how to focus on the now and not concern myself with worrying about things that had not even yet happened, that I was able to be happy.

Here’s a checklist of possibilities;

  • Instead of resolutions try writing in a gratitude journal. It doesn’t need to be fancy; a simple notebook will do

  • When negative thoughts arise, or you are faced with a tough decision, pause before you react. Three deep breaths can be your best ally as well as internally saying “I’ve got this”

  • Pick up the phone and talk with a friend. I’ve found that when I get into a whirl of thoughts, talking about it releases the energy and a friends perspective can often dispel your concerns

  • Keep a to-do list and mark off things you’ve accomplished. When your mind is continuously running trying to remember things it causes angst. Write it down, check it off, and let the 2 AM monkey roll off your back

  • Give yourself the gift of taking better care of yourself. Walk, exercise, eat well. The more you can, the better chance you have of changing your outlook. What you do and what you eat play a significant role in your mindset

Stop. Pause. Make the intention to redirect negativity. Be kind to yourself and listen to what your inner voice is telling you.

Warm wishes for a New Year full of peaceful moments.
